Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I write about and share music that I like. I hope you feel inspired to listen to something new today!

Sexy Back, by Justin Timberlake

Sexy Back, by Justin Timberlake

Back to basic (instincts!)

There’s nothing quite like a bit of JT to get those love juices flowing. (Too graphic? Sorry!) But even though you might not know you had them, this song helps you find your dirtiest dance moves. Personally I prefer not to make them available for public display on the dancefloor (too cringy the next day), but keep them for a more intimate time and place.Well deserving of its place in the “It’s getting hot in here” category, get tuned in and turned on.

How do they do that?

As always, there are lots of elements combining towards the overall effect, but I’ll just focus on the rhythm. It’s like a heartbeat. Not a background-keeping-you-alive-without-you-knowing kind of heartbeat, but one that you can feel through your whole body and which dominates your hearing, such is its prominence throughout the piece. And although it pulsates throughout, it is not monotonous. Yes there is the standard four beats in the bar with the strong, weak, strong, weak beats played by the drums, but the chords overlaying it, partly on the beat and partly off it (syncopated) help create that cardiac rhythm. Above it all, sometimes clearly audible, others less so, is a high pitched popping, which to me sounds a bit like the bleeps of a heart rate monitor. There are also clever little skips and occasional extra beats thrown in, generating that bodily excitement and often coinciding with a well-timed sigh, gasp or grunt in the vocal line! As the lyrics say “Are you ready?”

Hope you enjoy it or feel inspired to listen to something new today.
